Using this week’s course material, explain in detail the intercultural leadership messaging where you work. Describe what is done well and what needs to improve.
Interview three colleagues and ask specifically what leaders do well and what they need to improve in terms of conveying culturally sensitive messages within an organization or at a team level. Ensure the people you select can provide different perspectives and are culturally different. Share what you learned from the Rack 4 information with the three colleagues.
In your video reflection, include the following information:
– The feedback you have received from three colleagues.
– The explanation you offered your colleagues about the culture described in the Rack 4 readings and video.
– Details of the strategy you used for selecting whom you interviewed.
– Any surprises you discovered from your own perceptions of your leaders’ organizational messaging and that of the colleagues you interviewed.
– Any changes you will make regarding your own intercultural sensitivity when communicating to your organizational stakeholders.
– What you have learned from previous modules and two external sources that substantiate what you narrated.

A campaign announcement speech for your own future candidacy for elective office

A campaign announcement speech for your own future candidacy for elective office (Stacey Abrams for president running in the state of flordia). You should write this in the first person as if you all be delivering it to an audience of voters.
Your speech must include a 1-2 sentence rationale, a phrase that can be used as an external and universal version of your rationale (your campaign theme), and your three top issue priorities (including at least a couple of sentences explaining your position on those issues). You should also include at least some elements of your future personal, professional and political biography in the speech.
3 Components of an effective campaign messaging
Campaign rationale
The reason the candidate is running – why I’m running
Before you decided to run, you need to know why you’re running
Short and direct message to fit in the message of opportunity:
1 sentence – or, half-sentence BUT 2 sentences for president
I am running for this office/Congress/President because… [campaign rationale]
(haven’t been in Washington long, but long enough two know what needs to change Barack Obama’s Presidential Announcement)
Director between campaign rationale and biography (professional, personal, political biographies) ‘as a teacher and a parent, I am running for.. To create a better future for our children’
Biographies are stated verbally or implied in the rationale – should give voters an idea of who you are and what happened in your personal/professional/ political life that made you decide to run
What was it that made you decide to run?
Frame this into the rationale
I am running for president because [xyz]
Campaign theme
Shorter and even more direct than the rationale
A phrase – even sharper encapsulation of the rationale
Externalizes the rationale
rationale = the candidate
Theme = the voters
Rationale → first person singular, externalize and universalize it to a theme that is plural
I’m running for president to create a better future for our children – theme = “Better Future for our Children”
Obama’s: “Change you can believe in”
Any good theme can be a slogan but not any slogan can be a theme (not essential to our messaging process though)
Makes the voters feel included – universal version of the individual of the rationale, external version of the internal rationale + creates some kind of visual image
1996: Bill Clinton reelection- “Building a Bridge to the 21st century” → creates a visual, implies forward progress. Progress is being made but not quite there yet.
1984: Ronald Reagen reelection – “It’s Morning Again in America”
Building a bridge and morning are things that people can visualize
Campaign issues
Matters of public policy that a candidate would implement or prevent from being implemented. Hard to narrow it down for candidates. Prioritization.
3 guidelines on how to pick the issues:
The issue has to be important to the candidate –
John McCain’s 3 issues:
– economic growth
– national security
– campaign financial form
The voters’ need to think the issue is important
Will take up a greater portion of the window of opportunity if the voters’ aren’t as invested in the issue
There more time it takes – the smaller the window of opportunity will be
Obama – took time to explain why voters should care about healthcare
→ connect it to something voters do find important
Student loans – invest $$ in other things instead of paying off student loans – real estate, the economy,
The candidate and the voters should agree OR have the potential for agreement
If we have the potential for agreement – do it, but it will take up more of the window of opportunity
Talk about issues in the way that it relates to the rationale and the theme
Rationale and theme are broad
The issues are the most tangible parts of the campaign message

Is this legal? Briefly explain your answer.
In two or three sentences, what do you say to the employee?
You are a PR writer at a major hospital PR department. A new coworker was asked to help you create a series of brochures for the Cardiac Care Department. These brochures are for patients to read prior to various kinds of cardiac surgical procedures. The coworker recently came to your hospital from a competing hospital about three towns over. He said, “We did the exact same kind of brochure at my former hospital. I have copies of those brochures. Because I wrote the copy, we can just use copy from those brochures to save a lot of time.”
Entertainment PR is exciting and can be challenging. In an instant, a respected entertainer can face a crisis, and the PR professional is left to “try” to clean up the mess. The crisis of Kathy Griffin is one such case. Read “A Question of Ethics” on page 113. Answer the two questions at the end of the case. There is really no right or wrong answer. This is your opinion.
Classmate reply:
Kathy Griffin is a public figure with high public visibility, and thus whatever she communicates, and displays contribute to her reputation and character. As a comedian, she should be a very good judge of character, and also carefully assess words before using them. In this case, Kathy Griffin thought it to be hilarious holding a mask of Donald Trump’s bloody, severed head. Kathy’s reaction to the case warranted sympathy and caution for the national figure she inappropriately addressed. It should have been with concern and genuine to engage her ethical principles in addressing the head of state. After the demeaning act, and the irrefutable response she received, Kathy should have lessened the victimhood she showcased, and stopped blaming Donald Trump for making her life miserable. Having violated her stage name, and brand as a comedian, Kathy’s crisis could have been more controlled by her genuine desire to feel sorry, and seek forgiveness not only from the public but also from Donald Trump. She handled her crisis poorly and did not take the blame.
As her public relation representative, I would suggest that she conduct an interview to curb the ongoing rumors, and also clear her name from her irrefutable misconduct. A more direct interview with Donald Trump would be convenient to ensure the public takes her actions seriously and with good intentions. As a concerned comedian, she should recognize that not only her reputation is important, but also her career. Therefore, she needs to be genuinely sorry, and savage all the deals that she lost in mocking the president. A pardon should also be requested.

Classmates post:
1. I think the use of Scientific Management Perspective in organizations has a positive impact on communication. The core of this concept is to replace the limited output with the maximum output, and everyone can exert the maximum work efficiency and achieve the maximum success. That is to replace the low-cost production mode with the high-efficiency production mode to strengthen the control of labor costs. This can make employees work more efficiently. They will become more rapid in the process of getting along. They can also more directly see what is beneficial to them, so as to stay in the organization for a longer time.
If a porter earns $100 a day and carries 12 to 13 tons of iron each day, the way to reward and punish workers is to talk to them or dismiss them. I can find a worker who likes money. I can pay him $250 a day, but he needs to follow the new workload standard. After that, through careful study, we can make them transform various working factors to observe their impact on production efficiency. Sometimes the workers bend down to carry, sometimes they straighten up to carry, as well as the speed of walking, the position of holding objects and other variables.
Through long-term observation and test, we have well matched the working time and rest time, and the daily workload of workers can be increased to about 35 tons, while not feeling too tired. The piecework wage system can also be adopted. After the daily handling capacity of workers reaches 35 tons, the wage will also rise to $250. So when he started working, he moved 35 tons very early on the first day and got a salary of 250 dollars. So other workers gradually carried the goods in this way, and labor productivity increased a lot.
2. In my opinion, communication is the most important thing in a team, and communication cannot be separated from scientific management. Through scientific management, we can choose a better way of communication, improve the enthusiasm and collaboration in team work, to achieve the goals of the work. In team work, it is necessary to establish smooth communication methods, for example, open topics, so that all team members have the opportunity to speak and put forward suggestions, and other members can give feedback, through the feedback they can modify or establish more clear work objectives. Trust can be built between team members through friendly and patient communication. Trust is also one of the first prerequisites for doing your job.
Scientific management should be fair and full of diversity, accepting different voices brought by different cultural backgrounds, genders and races. Reasonable division of work, set up regular assessment can promote team efficiency and development. Make good use of everyone’s strengths and let everyone give full play to their personal advantages can maximize the team fit. Build their own unique team culture. Managers should reasonably use the form of meetings, whether face-to-face or online, to explain their priorities and standardize their agenda, so that the team can effectively communicate, reduce communication errors and solve problems more quickly. Scientific management is a continuous thing, managers should have their own organizational ability, and should have a standardized team rhythm. Listen to the accumulated feedback of the team and give your own reasonable suggestions.
3. In my opinion, when people are optimistic, their thinking and emotions will be more rational, and their actions and arrangements will be more organized. More confidence in things, more dare to face the outcome of things. When we communicate with others, optimistic attitude always can have better energy and positive attitude to drive others’ emotions. We could be more adventurous and practical in life. But pessimistic attitude, will affects our self-affirmation and clarity of judgment. Therefore, when communicating with others, a negative attitude often makes us have self-doubt, deny our own value, and even refuse to communicate with othersWhen people emotionally overheated, they will make some inappropriate choices and decisions, which will eventually lead to bad results.
For example, as a nurse, our working environment is often very challenging and high-pressure. Often face the pain of disease and death. This kind of stressful environment will also affect my daily life, so sometimes as a nurse we must have psychological counseling.
When I am pessimistic, it will affect my communication style, I don’t want to listen to others, and I don’t want to express my own ideas. It will affect my patients’ trust for me.
When I am optimistic, I like to communicate, I am full of expectations, and I am open-minded and generous. It is important to listen when the patient is in pain, and positive emotions can also help the patient actively cooperate with the treatment.
4. Being able to self-manage my emotions is super important for my job.
Being aware of my emotions can change the course of my day when going to work in the morning. I interact with customers and my team all day long so being in a positive mood is very important. Being able to take a step back and assess how I’m feeling affects how my day is going to go and how others on the team will go too. When someone comes into work frowning and sluggish, it demotivates everyone on the team. Compare this to someone who comes in lively and ready to work, others feel motivated to do the same. This is because people tend to match each other’s energy. People especially look up to their leader and it’s the leader’s job to set the pace of the day. As a leader, it’s imperative that you can regulate and self-manage your emotions. When I go to work and have a pessimistic view of everything it’s very important that I take a step back, acknowledge my feelings, but then try to be optimistic. I’ve found that when I notice I’m in a bad mood I try to not list everything that is going wrong. Instead, I try to think of things that are going my way. Tricking yourself into being optimistic is a beautiful thing and a way I manage my emotions. I remember someone once telling me that if you smile, you trick your brain into releasing endorphins!
